OneReef - A Local Agency To Help Battle Coral Reef Destruction (Info from OneReef)
What It Is:
This agency helps local communities to help protect and manage coral reefs. Coral Reef investors help donate the financial aid and technicalities that the community needs.
The Mission:
OneReef's mission is "to scale [their] model until reef decline is reversed".
Places Being Helped:
In 2010 OneReed formed two conservation agreements with communities in Palau,Micronesia and Yap, Micronesia (islands). These agreements are to help the local communities to combat reef destruction.
1st agreement:
OneReef works with Helen Reef Atoll, which is located in the portion of Palauan archipelago. This agreement is a 20-year agreement that can be renewed. The Hatohobei community will take a precationary approach to conservations and management that involves the following:a large no-take marine protected area, verifiable catch limits, annual ecological monitoring, and community consultation. The agreement with Helen Reef Atoll guarentees that adequate funding for the project.
2nd agreement:
OneReef works with Ngulu Atoll, another reef similar to Helen Reef loacted in Yap State. The agreement establishes a no-take marine protected zone over 75% of the designated area. The agreement also sets catch limits, and a radar system has recently been added to monitor vessel traffic.
Regulations of these agreements:
The Micronesia Conservation Trust (MCT), based in Pohnpei, serves as the conservation agent for agreements in these two regions discussed.the region. The MCT also serves as a fiscal agent and administers an oversight board with seats for community and regional leaders, financiers, and scientists. Changes to these agreements can be made by consulting with a board charter and the by-laws oAny modifications to agreements are executed by the oversight board in accordance with a board charter and by-laws.
What OneReef Does:
The local agency helps to reverse the decline of reefs on a global scale by removing the immediate human pressures. They try to combat this by setting up various protected local sites around coral reefs, such as in Palau and Yap, to monitor climate change, stress response, and adaptations.
How They Plan To Ensure Change:
By removing immediate human pressures in local communities, such as unauthorized fishing and land-based pollution, coral reefs will begin to recover and grow resilient to shifting climate change. Once attacked at a local level, coral reefs can then be encouraged to be protected at higher government levels.
