The South East Florida Coral Reef Initiative (SEFCRI) began in 1998, when former President Bill Clinton signed an Executive Order establishing the United STat4es Coral Reef Task Force. The task Force was established to lead U.S. government efforts to preserve and protect coral reefs. Florida contains a large portion of the U.S. oral reef ecosystems. The State of Florida recognizes the importance of the Executive Order and the need to protect and preserve the biodiversity, health, heritage, and socioeconomic values of our reefs and the marine environment.
The SEFCRI works with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation to create a team of marine resource professionals, scientists and stakeholders from government agencies and other organizations. The team first gathered in may of 2003 to develop local strategies needed to protect the coral reef resources extending from Miami-Dade country through Martin County.
